FUMING readers have successfully lobbied for London Spin, one of the UK’s top political newspapers to return to its old format, London Spin can reveal. The newly created ‘Viz style’ edition of the newspaper was slammed by readers who described it as ‘unprofessional’ and ‘amateur’ in a series of raging emails to the editorial team. The backlash was underlined by a drop in readers who BOYCOTTED the site in a co-ordinated online protest.

One reader emailed to say, “I have to say the format stinks, and its rubbish for reading on my mobile, several of my friends have said they will stop reading your paper as a result of the new format changes.” The much anticipated makeover cost a five figure sum, but fell flat with readers. Hoffman Raises Concerns Over Loopy Union Policies

Last year, I was away from the ludicrous regulations and referendums passed in my name and other Leeds University Students, by virtue of our University Union membership. Of course I still heard the odd rumour, there was the attempt to ban bottled water and stop The Sun being sold at the University, but thankfully these referendum motions did not pass.

However this common sense approach did not last for long. A few weeks back I was informed that a referendum calling for the banning of all leafleting on University property, as well as making it illegal on the surrounding street areas was passed. In one action the Union and those members who voted for it had passed a referendum that damaged both private enterprise and individual liberty, whilst informing me in an email and over Twitter this was in the name of justice and the environment. However, these claims are spurious. Most students I spoke to couldn’t care less about politics and see the referendums for those who are politically active. Therefore, every year turnouts are extremely low, even though all University members are saddled by the consequences. Whilst this year’s turnout was slightly higher than usual, it was still nothing to write home about. It is no wonder with this approach to democracy that myself and friends commonly refer to Leeds University as the Socialist Republic.

If you talk to most students about leafleting on any Campus, they will say similar things. It may be annoying, I may throw it in the bin, but as this is their property through the fees they are paying for they are free to do what they like and I’m free to ignore them as a private individual. I fear for friends in Drama and Theatre Societies who survive on the basis that they can leaflet for shows, which raise money for charities, as well as providing an avenue for good publicity. How about the ten pin bowling society, which I have become an expert on due to my housemates Are they going to be told that there not going to be able to advertise special offers or encourage give it a go sessions, or link up with businesses to organize nights out. Without these promotions the society could wither and die. It appears the Union in this short-sighted and illiberal measure is encouraging this.

At University I frequently pass the Socialist Workers Stall. I find a lot of what they say, wear and shout offensive. I’ve told them this and explained why they might just like to support capitalism. What I would never seek to do though is tell them how to act or promote on campus, as this would undermine freedom of expression. They have as much right to express their views on campus as I do and leafleting is a valuable part of this. University should symbolise free debate and academic freedom and the leafleting ban flies in the face of this.

Win or lose, I will work to combat examples like this of bias at University, which is detrimental to all students.

Cameron´s Bulldog Spirit Should Make us Proud to be British

David Cameron has demonstrated true courage and conviction by standing up to EU bullies to put Britain´s interests first. Despite criticism from the usual suspects and biased coverage on the BBC, Cameron has proved he is a radical Prime Minister, with a strong agenda, rejecting the ludicrous regulations that could suffocate our financial services industry. This is a great moment for our country where we rejected measures which could seriously threaten our economic prosperity, and a moment of which we should all be truly proud.

Many have been left surprised by the outcome, assuming that Cameron would simply roll over and do as he was told. But the decision to use the veto sends a clear signal to our European partners that Britain is not a country to be taken for granted or one that will give into intimidation and simply do what other leaders want.

The outcome of this decision is that Cameron returns home a Conservative hero, but he must now stand firm on his decision. It is deeply disappointing that the BBC´s coverage of a British triumph has been painted as a disaster across the airwaves. But he cannot allow this bias to force him to change course.

As Cameron stands firm as the British Bulldog, it is nothing short of embarrassing to see the the small puppy Ed Miliband attempting to nip at his feet. So weak is the leader of the opposition´s statement on the issue, it hardly warrants a mention in the press. Miliband has managed to shift from confused to simply annoying in a very short space of time.

This is a stark wake up call for those with fluid political convictions who left the Conservative Party and Conservative Future before the full facts had been established. Remaining loyal to your fellow Tories is a core value that we must all maintain if our party is to deliver on its promises. Now the wind is blowing in a different direction, don´t be surprised if you hear a timid knock knock on the door in the coming months.

This British victory also opens the door for a new, more collaborative approach for Conservative Future and external groups. As I´ve long believed, our organisation can be strengthened by working together with our fellow partners for events, speaking and training of our activists of the future. Now is the time for like-minded Conservatives to come together and send a clear signal that the British Bulldog is back.

Does Experience Matter?

Whether you are considering a career in politics or in another employment sector; your potential employer will be interested in what transferable skills and experience you will bring to the organisation. The same can very much be said about CF.

During this election, I have witnessed other candidates with plenty of experience and service to Conservative Future taking the decision to stand for senior positions. Naturally, these people believe that through the variety of experiences they have had of developing transferable skills, over many years of service, they now have harnessed the potential to complete the jigsaw that will enable them to fulfil a position that best matches their individual strengths. It is certainly the path I have followed. I would not have put myself forward for Deputy Chairmen Political if I was not enthusiastic about the post and if I had not first served in grassroots CF positions (CF Officer, Leeds City Conservatives 2007, Events Secretary Leeds CF 2008). Crucially, my two and a half years as Regional Chairman of Yorkshire and Humber (2008 – 2011) has provided me with the necessary insight, time management and leadership skills whilst “flying the flag” for young members.

So what of candidates standing for senior positions with little or no experience of service? Certainly one of scepticism at first. I am always cautious when reading about hopefuls where they have no previous track record of delivery or working for the party at a day-to-day grassroots level. It is important that every member thinks first and foremost about what role he or she is best suited to fill and how it will be of service to the party. They also need to carefully consider if they have the necessary experience to succeed. In most cases this should be working from the grassroots level up and building up a track record of delivering well-attended campaign days and fun packed social events.

A candidate’s ability and specialist knowledge is important but so too are their ‘soft’ skills such as communication, presentation, problem solving and political awareness. If you show one or more of these skills in abundance then it is not necessarily the case that you should feel compelled to ‘do your time’ in a role that you are not suited towards. We should always be on the look out for rare talent and encourage such people to fulfil a role suited to there unique skills. However, experience suggests that such circumstances are infrequent. As in all walks of life we can end up with many candidates standing for posts that they are simply not suited towards filling. It is for this reason why I am supporting the proposal put forward by Ben Howlett for a CF contract to hold elected officers to account and to put in place a mechanism to move on those that are simply not working hard enough.

I believe that experience matters more than ever when it comes to the foundations of a successful political career. There will always be individuals that focus on building their experience and those that believe they have that rare talent to succeed without it. My advice to friends and colleagues is to focus on the former and build up a record of delivering results, working hard and looking for progression when a role suited to your passion, talents and political record arises. One should always be sure to question their suitability for the role. Never simply go for a position because it is available. That is no reason to stand for a position and in the long term it can do yourself and our party a disservice.

The Next Election: Like This Time, or Last Time?

Forgive me for shifting focus briefly to the next election but as I’ve said before, this one really isn’t generating a lot of material for a columnist to cover. In fact, it was while talking about that problem that the idea for this column came up.

I was talking with another member of GMCF about how dry these elections were and whether this was part of an ongoing trend. They mooted instead that the next election, far from being as dry as this one, would likely be more akin to the more red-blooded contest in 2010.

Their reasoning touched an issue I raised in another earlier column: the impact of incumbency on a race. The idea is that because of the advantages of encumbancy enjoyed by Howlett, it is largely taken as read that he’s going to win. This in turn has a major psychological impact on his opponents and the shape of the race.

I know from experience of student union politics that running against a high-profile incumbent can be a deeply dispiriting experience. Faced with what you think is the prospect of near-certain defeat it can be hard to muster the sheer energy required for a good campaign.

A candidate’s A-game is also hampered by the fact that there is a strong disincentive to trying to land serious blows. I wrote before about how both Southworth and McDonough have seeminly shrunk from anything resembling an attack on Howlett.

This could well be because both think they’ll most likely have to continue to operate in an organisation where he is Chairman and thus any attacks will damage their long-term prospects. It is much more tempting to go all-out for your opponent when you think it could be the difference between victory and defeat than when you think you’re simply risking ill-feeling for no gain.

Next election however, Howlett will have to step down. This will mean that the deadening effect of the incumbency factor won’t be weighing down the campaigns of next year’s candidates. They’ll have it all to play for. We’re thus, the logic runs, far more likely to see the sort of “vigorous inter-candidate combat” I pleaded for in my last article.

We’re also more likely to see proper pre-campaigns, especially from candidates who don’t win one of the Deputy Chairmanships this time round. This will allow candidates, commentators and voters to get an early feel for the race and generate more competition and scrutiny.

A proper, competitive campaign both forces candidates to demonstrate the full depths of their abilities and puts their programmes under much greater scrutiny. So I really hope we get one, and not just – as Gossip Tory pointed out – because it will be much more interesting to write about.

Q1. What is your key policy for Conservative Future?

A: It is so important that we do not lose what CF is all about and that is it's local branches. They are the rock of the organisation and we must continue to support them and build upon them. Over the past year branches have built up tremendously. We must continue the promotion of CF and not become complacent.

Q2. Why should we vote for you and not your opponent?

A: I hope that you think I'm the right person for the job. I have been involved in CF for 3 years and in that time have achieved a great deal. Skegness Branch which I chaired for the last two is a success and it is great to see an active branch. It has been noted that my opponent for this position has just 8 months experience as an active member. It is perhaps worrying that she is still at school doing her A-levels however if you think she can do a better job than I can I would ask you to vote for her. I only want to take on this role if I am supported. I only have one motive and that is to give back what CF has given me.

Q3. What experience have you got ?

A: Outside of branch level - I was Deputy Lincolnshire Area Chair and Acting Chair for a number of months before handing over the Chairmanship. One of the reasons I then took the position as East Midlands Deputy Regional Chair (Membership) was to try and see what we could do to improve membership. Lincolnshire was struggling at the time as was many of the areas in the region. Myself and a fantastic team managed to triple membership in the East Midlands Region. Since then Lincolnshire has too increased in numbers which is fantastic to see. I hope that I can take my experience in this portfolio to the National stage.

Q4. Does your role as a Councillor give you any extra experience?

A: Absolutely ! Being an elected Conservative Town Councillor has given me vital experience. I am in the process of setting up a youth council for the town so again it is all about recruitment and promotion. Something which we are forever trying to do in CF. Standing for Council and being elected is my greatest achievement to date without a doubt and I love it. I love representing the people of Skegness and I love making a difference.

Q5. Is there anything else you would like to tell the membership?

A: Make the right choice. We have to make the right choices for CF over the next 12 months. All I will say it has been a pleasure to have been part of this organisation for the last few years. I have seen people come and go, never thinking that I would have the opportunity to make a real difference. Whatever the result I look forward to seeing you all in the near future. Keep in touch.

Hoffman Pledges to Bring Back Tory Madrasa

I would posit from the people I know and have spoken to who have defected, the reason they often say is "I didn't leave the party (Conservative Future) they left me.

People like myself and Dominic understand these people and don't paint them as dangerous extremists, because they are not. If we get into a position of power in CF, we will do our best to encourage them back in to the fold, through showing that they do have a voice in CF and it will be heard. You may disagree with me on issues like the EU, International Aid and Immigration, but I'm prepared to have an open discussion about this and with as many people as possible in the next couple of weeks. I’m happy to do this either in person over a pint or by email, Facebook or Twitter. It is time that all voices were heard in CF and not just a minority.”

Enough of These Timidly Clean Campaigns

It is entirely admirable to want to fight a clean campaign. A campaign without vicious personal abuse, ad hominem attacks and other such distasteful and unproductive skulduggery can generally be taken to be a good thing. Bad campaigns can leave scars that take months or years to heal and do serious harm to an organisation.

This year’s crop of candidates certainly seems to be trying to keep the campaign as squeaky clean as possible. But somewhere along the line someone seems to have gone overboard in interpreting what a ‘clean’ campaign means. It does mean that you don’t attack your opponent on irrelevant, fictitious or personal criteria. It doesn’t mean that you don’t attack your opponent at all.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but this campaign seems to have been terribly… well, quiet. Aside from one gentlemanly bout of fisticuffs between McDonough and Southworth over who owns the CF rewards policy, none of the candidates for chairman appear to have laid much of a finger on each other.

This election is being covered by three CF-focused news sites – Gossip Tory, The Blue Guerilla and our own London Spin – but doesn’t seem to be generating very much actual news. When you read all three it can appear at times that they’re left simply either to stand silent for days at a time or re-report each other’s stories.
Purely ‘positive’ campaigns are poorly things because they simply become exercises in positive speaking. The real test of a candidate is how good they are at responding to criticism, defending their ideas and ferretting out weaknesses in their opponents’ proposals or record.
Abstaining from this isn’t admirable. Acting as if you’re above criticising your opponent doesn’t make you seem a saint so much as a snob. The fact is that anybody can run a ‘positive’ campaign and it says very little about a candidate on its own. It has to be accompanied by courteous but vigorous inter-candidate combat.

Otherwise, you end up with the electorate feeling disengaged. Whatever your feelings about Ben Howlett, there exists quite clearly a constituency of members who are quite antipathetic to his record and candidacy. Yet neither of his opponents is actually attacking him and articulating these concerns, meaning that he isn’t having to defend himself. Where is the value in that?
Dominic McDonough has just released his full manifesto, which can be found over on tBg. Both the men who think they deserve the job more than he does should read it, pick over the pieces they think don’t work and then criticise it publicly and in writing. Then Dom can defend it, and we’ll have a proper campaign going.

Twelve months ago, before Ben took over; it was clear that CF was heading down the wrong path. Our organisation was repeatedly popping up in the papers for all the wrong reasons, infighting, extremism and intimidation had taken hold and – shockingly – ahead of the General Election two members of the National Executive joined the Labour Party. A toxic combination of inexperienced leadership, without a backbone meant that securing support for our events from any elected members of Council let alone Parliament was an impossible task.

Fast forward twelve months to December 2011 and Conservative Future is having events with the Culture Secretary, the Chancellor, the Work and Pensions Secretary, the Prime Minister and is even booked in for a reception at Number 10 in the New Year. On a grassroots level, Northern Conservative Future has held its first ever ball attracting hundreds of attendees and driving up CF’s membership across the whole of the UK. CF has transformed from a liability to an asset in a very short space of time.

Look around you on campaign days in the sun, rain and snow and you’ll probably spot Ben out and about doing his bit. It is indeed a remarkable feat to successfully transform CF’s overarching structure to such a degree, whilst remaining loyal to supporting Conservative candidates on the doorstep in critical elections.

It’s also time for activists to reject the bizarre and obsessive notion that if you’re not embarrassing the party and hemorrhaging Tory votes then you’re not doing your job properly. CF is supposed to be about winning elections for candidates, and training and encouraging the next generation to stand up for our values at all levels of the political hierarchy.

One only has to look at the abuse and smears Howlett has received from CF’s enemies to see that he is a Chairman with a backbone who is getting things done. A weaker leader would have rolled over, but Ben stuck to his guns and carried on making CF great again.

For the first time in many years Conservative Future looks and feels like a professional organisation with a truly national membership base. We are an agile and exciting vehicle for young political hopefuls to get involved and fulfill their political dreams.

With so much at stake, we cannot allow our organisation to fall into the hands of those individuals itching to hit the rewind button and drag Conservative Future back into the sewers of obscurity.

Should Conservative Future Split?

Since before I was elected Manchester chairman, I’ve been mulling over the virtues of a couple of splits in CF. Not on ideological grounds, but rather on the grounds that as an organisation it seems to struggle to represent upper school pupils, students of higher or further education and young professionals all at the same time.

CF came about, as I understand it, because there weren’t enough young Tories to sustain its predecessor organisations. These were the Young Conservatives, the Conservative Collegiate Forum (commonly known as Conservative Students) and Conservative Young Professionals.
As such, the merger was one of arithmetical convenience and now – our fortunes revived – it is worth considering at least part-reversing it.

As CF is presently constituted students don’t seem to get much of a look in for senior leadership positions. GMCF is an overwhelmingly student branch, and as such is keen to support student representatives to the national committee. Yet all the candidates for national chairman are young professionals.

This is scarcely surprising. After all, a student without an income will struggle to raise the money needed to run a campaign tour or to travel the country during their time of office.
While it is good to see Ben Howlett and others talking about a new approach to the NUS, Conservative students would surely benefit from a full-time organisation to help organise themselves not only for party campaigning but for fighting elections within student unions.
Isn’t it time we saw more Conservative sabbatical officers, and saw CFs in university and college areas properly organising campaigns to deliver a formidable Tory bloc at the NUS conference?
These areas are unlikely to receive the sort of dedicated attention they need with Young Professionals at the helm. Similarly, Young Professionals are not likely to find much to attract them in a student-dominated CF branch.

In Manchester, my predecessor and I discussed and then established two new Executive posts: the Young Professionals and Schools officers. These are to ensure that the areas of CF where GMCF is under-strength (non-students) receive the dedicated attention they need.
Our YP Officer Chris Clarkson is in the process of setting up a ‘shadow Exec’ for an autonomous organisation, working alongside and within the mostly-student GMCF while being able to focus on the development of its own membership.

We hope that this will allow both groups to grow and thrive by focusing on the particular leads of their members, rather than trying to cram people from 15 to 30 into one organisation.
Howlett is attending the first meeting of GMCF Young Professionals, following on from his own policy of separate YP events. I hope that other CFs across the country will consider following suit so that both students and young professionals can receive the attention they warrant.

Challengers Must Wake Up to the Advantages of Incumbency

In the course of a debate with another member of GMCF about the elections, an interesting division came up regarding how we chose who to vote for. When voting for a candidate, which should be your primary focus: rewarding work done, or choosing plans for the future?

In this instance, GMCF being a northern branch, the debate revolved around ‘who has done most for the North?’ The answer was obviously Ben Howlett. But with this sort of question the answer is nearly always the incumbent.

After all, the fact that Southworth and McDonough have not put in as much time in the North as Howlett isn’t really surprising, as they were not National Chairman. Nor does it indicate that they wouldn’t put in similar time if they were elected to a national position.

Yet this serves to highlight the sheer extent of the incumbency advantage in a less high profile election like this one. In grownup politics, the Opposition receive near-constant media coverage. Even if it isn’t always flattering, they are at least continually in the public consciousness.

In CF, on the other hand, there is no opposition during someone’s term of office. Challengers rather emerge from the mist when declaring their candidacies. A certain pool of nationally-aware CF members might be aware of them, but it’s a safe bet that the majority of members aren’t.

Meanwhile the incumbent has been able to get their name out for a year. Thus any challenger has a huge mountain to climb. Not only do they need to design a better manifesto than the man or woman they aim to topple, but they also need to persuade the electorate to vote on manifestos rather than simply re-electing the incumbent for services rendered. That involves doing serious harm to the incumbent on the campaign trail.

We’ve reached a point in the election where commentators are starting to write off Southworth and McDonough’s campaigns. Neither of them took the trouble to attend the Northern CF reception last night, an act of strategic madness hard to comprehend. In focusing their campaign fire on each other, they’re wasting energy being irrelevant and falling further behind the man they’re meant to be trying to beat.

If either of them harbour any ambition of toppling Howlett in December, they need to wake up to the sheer scale of his head start before it’s too late.

Northern CF's Xmas Bash Triumphs

NORTHERN CF hosted a luxurious Christmas feast over the weekend, London Spin can reveal. The event, which attracted over 150 youngsters from a variety of territories, included a posh three course meal, with roast turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings, drenched in gravy.

The booze-drenched knees up included at least two MPs and committed candidates keen to woo voters ahead of the CF National elections. Despite a room packed out with members, Ben Howlett was the only candidate for National Chairman who bothered to turn up, giving a vote of thanks to exec candidates James Deighton and Philip Smith for organising the plush feast which included hand crafted cheesecake and clotted cream. Other key attendees who turned up to show their support included Robin Hunter-Clarke who is standing for Deputy Chairman Membership and Shane Robert Moore who is standing for Regional Chief in the North East.

There was a brief moment when our correspondent on the scene thought that the curse of The CF Reforms had returned.

But it was actually just the name of the local radio station.....

Aldridge Withdraws Application for London Chairman

Only a few weeks ago Whiten stood unsuccessfully for Chairman of East Midlands CF, claiming his ambition was for “East Mids CF (to be) the voice of young people.”

A source inside East Midlands CF told this newspaper, “I am disappointed to see Jakob or any member defect to another party. However, Jakob appears to have never really been a Conservative and his obsession with European politics has always been a concern. The source continued, “Talking to people in my area and across the East Midlands, the issues they are raising are not Europe, but rather the economy, jobs and reform of our public services. INTERNATIONAL AID- BAD FOR UK, BAD FOR THE DEVELOPING WORLD

If only government-to-government international aid did help. Unfortunately, as highlighted by Dambisa Moyo in her book Dead Aid, it often does not. If you want to see the developing world flourish get the private sector involved in this area, as unlike the Government frequently does it will not make a pigs ear of it.

If you want to help the world's poorest freeing trade is the way. That means getting rid of CAP that dumps goods on African farmers and creates a tariff wall that developing nation’s farmers cannot compete against. Additionally due to CAP working against competition, customers all across Europe are paying more in food costs. Nonetheless, in the EU’s infinite wisdom this makes up over 40% of its budget. No wonder the WTO (World Trade Organisation) wants to see tariffs in Europe reduced by 80% to give developing nation farmers a chance to compete on an even playing field. On top of this you have many American tariffs and subsidies that add to this problem. Getting rid of these trade barriers would be far better at alleviating poverty. Perhaps this view is just ignored, because it smacks too much of common sense.

Moreover, we give aid to countries like Pakistan who is using it when it comes to the ISI as the Wikileaks document showed, to protect known terrorists. This seems to be giving international aid in a way that is contrary to the national interest. The Government continually says it wants to direct the aid budget in a way that works in our national interest, yet this is an example of it doing the exact opposite.

Then there are countries like India and China who are economic powerhouses that we give international aid to that simply do not need it. Yes there are poor people in these countries, but surely it is the job of these government’s who have ample amount of money of their own to help their people on poverty, not rely on the handouts of other nations. After all, isn’t this the basis of national sovereignty that governments have to take national responsibility? What’s the point of having elections, if you just delegate difficult decisions to others?

The common problem here is that that our Government’s aid helps prop up corrupt regime who use it to expand the size of the state and thus their control over people, who are forced to become more dependent on a state that robs individuals of their freedom. Figures back this up as by 2002 The African Union estimated that corruption was costing the continent $150 million a year. Consequently government-to-government aid is not just ineffective, it is positively harmful.

Additionally it has not tackled poverty in the developing world. Dambisa Moyo points out that over the past 60 years at least $1 trillion of development-related aid has been transferred from rich countries to Africa. Yet real per-capita income today is lower than it was in the 1970s, and over 350 million people a day are living on less than a dollar a day, a figure that has nearly doubled in two decades. However, people still haven’t learned the lesson that free trade not aid handouts is the path to prosperity. Once again on the altar of good intentions everyone loses.

Most people want to help the poorest in the world, but government-to-government international aid apart from in emergency situations is not the way. It is simply throwing money away that will often be used by corrupt and murderous dictators to lead their lavish lifestyles and kill their own people. It's giving money to governments that do not have our national interests at heart. It is time the government saw sense and slashed the International aid budget for everyone’s sake.

Labour’s Web Chief ‘Fuming’ Over CF Gravy Revolution

LABOUR’S web Chief Laurence Durnan was tonight fuming over Conservative Future’s well publicised ‘Gravy Revolution’, London Spin can disclose. In a bile-filled rant on his site Political Scrapbook –a sloppy, left-wing imitation of London Spin – he lambasted National Chairman Ben Howlett over a light hearted joke about chips and gravy in the North. Howlett, who lived in Durham for three years and whose parents come from Yorkshire, was referencing the huge rise in candidates from outside of London standing in the elections. Conveniently, Durnan’s attack coincided with Howlett’s main opponent ‘going negative’ in the battle for CF Chairman.

Durnan is a controversial figure within the blogosphere, and was recently pulled up by Lib Dem blogger Andrew Emmerson for allowing racist comments to appear on his site. What troubles Labour insiders (and more importantly, CF activists) however is his rather public friendship both online and offline with bloggers on the Tory right, with many members saying it’s only a matter of time until history repeats itself.

A source told this newspaper, “It’s a complete non-story. He should drop the ‘S’ from Political Scrapbook, or face being prosecuted under the trade descriptions act.”

Do Endorsements Matter?

If I’m brutally honest, I didn’t pay very much attention to the last national elections. So in order to bring myself up to speed for commenting on this one, I went back over the coverage provided by ToryBear and The Blue Guerilla. One of the things that struck me most was the sheer ridiculousness of the ‘endorsements’ process.

Perhaps you need to have read the election coverage all in one go for the absurdity to properly hit you, so let me describe it to you. Throughout the coverage great attention is paid to which branches are endorsing which candidates. Great play is made of each branch that lines up behind a particular candidate and its impact on said candidates chances debated. Many branches, with theoretical memberships in the hundreds, threw their weight into the ring.

On election day, less than two hundred people vote, in total, for the position of National Chairman. The other positions see turnouts lower still. Clearly, numerous committees and chairmen had thrown their support behind candidates when really that support amounted to nothing more than their own individual votes.

The disparity is really quite sharp, and it got me thinking – how important are endorsements to the campaign? Do they actually signify strong support in an area, or are they just illusions conjured up by a small number of people fixated on the election to give themselves something to talk about?

As an area chairman who is overseeing the GMCF endorsements process, this isn’t a purely academic question on my part. The system I’m implementing should allow for every candidate to have a fair shot at presenting their views to the membership on issues that matter to Greater Manchester, but is it all a waste of time?

Hopefully online voting will make it easier for branches to mobilise their members and keep them engaged with the election, which could lend endorsements more weight within a given branch – the so-called ‘ground war’. But what impact do individual endorsements have on the national campaign, the air war?

I’m not convinced it’s very much. The only people who are likely to follow the ins and outs of the endorsements are people who regularly read such fine purveyors of CF gossip as tBg and London Spin, and people that engaged will probably make their minds up for themselves.

Reflections on Conservative Future

As December’s approaching I’ve been reflecting over the last year as my time on the National Executive for Conservative Future is coming to an end. It’s been an incredibly exciting 12 months as Deputy Chairman, Membership, meeting activists and pushing through changes that our organisation so badly needs. After late nights, early starts, many working weekends, I am proud to say that CF is now a more professional, efficient and respected movement, fit to enable a new generation of bright stars as they climb the political ladder.

Last summer, I ran for the position of membership because I fundamentally believe that each and every volunteer makes CF great. I immediately began restructuring the resources available for new and existing members to make processes simpler and more effective.
Over the last year, in terms of training, we’ve held CF’s first ever one day conference and several candidates training workshops at CCHQ to get our activists media savvy and ready for the political spotlight. We’ve pooled all membership data from local branches and created a centralised CF database, in order to make communication easier with our members which culminated with the Prime Minister thanking all CF Chairmen for their efforts with this huge task. Most importantly, as promised, you will be able to vote online in this year’s elections, a remarkable step forward.

But CF isn’t always about policies and procedures – the huge number of candidates from the Midlands and the North standing in the elections proves beyond doubt that CF is a truly national organisation, bursting the traditional London bubble to which it is traditionally associated. We’ve also seen a huge rise in the number of women candidates in the running, a sure sign that CF is a vibrant, forward looking organisation and a perfect starting platform for young people in politics.

Like all areas of politics, youth elections can be a bumpy ride, so there will always be one or two bad eggs around, relishing the opportunity for smears and dirty politics. My advice is simple; keep smiling and carry on. Be happy in yourself, and don’t for one second let them make you as unhappy as they are. And always remember, these character traits will lead to their own undoing, whether that be now or in the future, it’s only a matter of time.

When people ask me why I have decided not to stand again, the answer is simple. After being involved with CF for over 13 years I believe that it’s time for a new generation of activists to step up to the mark, and take our organisation forward to even greater achievements. The last 12 months working with Ben, Serene, James and Peter has been an absolute privilege, and their hard work and commitment proves what can be achieved when you have a stable, professional team working with members to take CF forward. I have had a brilliant time this year and my proudest moment was launching the Birch Memorial School Appeal after teaching 70 street children in Sierra Leone.

Good luck to each and every candidate standing this year, the future of our organisation will be in your hands soon, and I know you’ll make us proud.
